Fethiye embodies all the traditional attractions of the Mediterranean. An ancient site of civilization, remanents of those who have come before are here to be explored. Even Cleopatra found the area worth the visit. The blue of the Med is l egendary, but until it is actually seen first hand, the words are meaningless. The natural features such as the beach at Oludeniz, the Saklikent gorge, Dalyan tortoise beach, Pamukale cotton castle, are found nowhere else in the world, and all are within easy day travel from Fethiye.
For those with more modern interests, the challenge will be deciding what to do next. Sailing, swimming, tennis, mini-golf, horse-riding, diving, trek-safari, safari, white-water rafting, canoeing, micro-lights, wind-surfing, and paragliding will compete for your time.
For those who seek less energetic pass times, a Turkish bath in the traditional Hamam, sun bathing on the beach or around the pool, a mud bath, a relaxing day on a tour boat around the bay or an overnight trip to Rhodes Island may be more attractive. Fishing from the bank or from a from a boat may bring a glimpse of sea turtles, dolphins or even flying fish. For camera buffs there are endless opportunities with beautiful sea and mountain views in every direction. Shoppers of course are also well catered for and the selection of restaurants and excellent culinary delights could occupy a holiday on their own.

Ölüdeniz
A 14 km drive through beautiful pine forested mountains behind Fethiye, brings you to one of the most famous beauty spots in Turkey. The reflection of wite sand under still, crystal clear water, gives the sea the turquoise colour it I famous for. Framed by white sand beach, the lagoon has become a symbol for holidays in Turkey. Surrounded by pine covered hills rising up from the water, it could easily be mistaken for a small piece of Paradise. Indeed, legend has it that it was a gift from God to the world.
Rising up behind the beach is the highest mountain in the world which rises straight from the sea, Babadag (Father Mountain). From here, paragliders launch to circle the bay like multi-coloured birds. Training is available for this, or lyou can fly with experienced pilots. Food and drink is available on the beach and a shallow area is roped off for children to play safely in the sea. |

Butterfly Valley
Designated in 1995 as a first degree natural protected area and any type of building is strictly prohibited. The valley is rocky and pine covered and requires some climbing ¸ but the reward is the sight of millions of butterflies covering the trees and cliffs like a colourful scarf. Access to this valley is by boat or water taxi. Experienced and professionally equipped climbers will find paths that will take them higher and into areas that are too steep and unsafe for ordinary hiking, but provide a rewarding experience for them.

Kaya Köy
Historically, until 1922, Kaya Köy was a Greek community. It is known that there was a Christian community there since the 13 th Century. As part of the reformation of Turkey and the end of the Ottoman Empire, the government forced all Greeks to return to Greece and with the Turks living there forced to return. At the time of the removal, there were about 25,000 people living in Kaya Köy. Houses were to be exchanged, and shortly after the return of the Turks, they all left. The town is slowly being restored, but for the most part is still a ghost town. The remains of the homes are beautiful, and the area is now designated as a historical protected site. This is a must on anyone's list of places to see in the area. |

The Saklikent
Some miles out of Fethiye, sliced into a mountain side, the Saklikent Gorge is a the result of the erosion of water which gushes out of the rock some kilometers back into the mountains. It is an incredibly beautiful place.
At the entrance, a wooden walkway, attached to the wall of the narrow canyon, takes you back over the rushing water into a more open area, shaded by trees, where platforms over gushing water are arranged for dining and one can lounge on cushions while being served fresh trout or gözleme (a large pancake filled with meat, cheese or chocolate, etc) and ayran, a local yogurt drink, or a cold beer. It is possible to walk further into the the canyon which is extremely narrow in places, and steep in others, but also very beautiful. A good place to chill on a hot summer day.
